Client: Birmingham City Council
In April 2016 we completed a major two year £7m internal and external estate refurbishment programme at Poet’s Block, Birmingham, which included three high-rise blocks of flats.
Key Successes
- Resident engagement and liaison was particularly complex and required very careful planning and roll out. Resident liaison included: meetings with the local Housing Liaison board and block tenant groups, pre-start surveys and resident input into quality specification.
- In order to reach the large number of residents involved, we refurbished derelict local shops that had been empty for a decade to create a convenient drop-in centre. Once work was finished, the facility was gifted back to the community.
Works included:
- External works: insulating and re-roofing, new curtain walling on external communal staircases, external wall insulation, infilling open balconies, installing mains gas, environmental improvements including paving and landscaping .
- Internal works: communal re-plastering and redecoration, upgraded fire stopping, rewiring of all communal areas, new LED emergency lighting, new central heating in all flats.
The works were completed on time and budget, with an average customer satisfaction rate of 98.3%. In addition, local businesses reported a significant upturn in local revenue as a direct result of the work.
